Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene-page-001

Mary Magdalene is thought to have come from the village of Magdala, which is located along the western shores of Galilee.  It appears she was a single woman and became a follower of Jesus.

One of the first things we are told about Mary is that seven devils had been cast from her. What these seven devils were no one can honestly tell you. Some have made up scenarios such as she was a loose woman but we are not told in the Bible what these devils were. They could have been anything from a loose woman to she was inflicted with a mental illness of some sort.
“And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.” Luke 8:2-3

After becoming a follower of Jesus, Mary did what Christians are supposed to do, she served. If you notice above in verse three it says she ministered unto Jesus  from her substance.  This means that she supported him financially and with her spiritual gifts of servitude. Mary and a select few women traveled with Jesus and his disciples taking care of them so they could minister the word of God to others.

Many speculate that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and even had children. In my upcoming book, “Who Is Jesus”,  I point out that a married man cares for things that please his wife. An Unmarried man is better equipped to minister because he can concentrate fully on the things of God. They would not be distracted by their wives. Jesus’ mission was to bring people to God and his life was dedicated to that. If Jesus was married or had children he would not have had to make arrangements for his mother when he was crucified. Jesus always led by example. If Jesus had children they would have been part God and a big to-do would have been made over such a happening. Nowhere does the Bible support such gibberish.
“But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: 33 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.”
1 Corinthians 7:32-33
“When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.” John 19:26-27

Mary, as well as a group of women, which included Jesus’ mother Mary, was present and stayed with Jesus through his crucifixion.
“Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.” John 19:25

Mary was the first person to speak to Jesus after his resurrection. Her heart was broken because she could not find his body, but what a privilege she was granted to be held in such high esteem by our Saviour as for him to personally console her.
“But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, 12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. 14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. 17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.” John 20:11-18

Mary Magdalene is often put down by others who try to paint her as a lady of the night. But even if this was the case she overcame and served God with her wallet and her service. We should try to be more like the woman Mary became and not worry about her past. We are forgiven by God and our sins forgotten as were her sins. One should not listen to rumors or gossip but only the word of God. Jesus saw her as a mighty woman of God.

Have you asked Jesus to forgive your sins? Are you serving him with all your heart and your personal service?  Do you contribute to the furthering of his word? Mary did!
