Delilah

Delilah-page-001

Delilah is thought to be a beautiful woman as Sampson lusted for her. She is not known for her goodness. She is known as a very cunning, evil, self-centered and selfish woman who eventually nagged Sampson to death. She is not a good role model for women.

Before Sampson’s birth Israel had once again disobeyed God and he let them become slaves of the Philistines for forty years.
“And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.” Judges 13:1

Toward the end of their capture, God’s angel informed the wife of Manoah that she would bear a son. She was not to drink wine or strong drink or eat anything unclean well carrying this child. She also must make sure that his hair was never cut. The Bible said he would be a Nazarite from the womb. A Nazarite was a person that took a vow and were set apart for God’s work.
“For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.” Judges 13:5

Sampson loved Delilah very much. But had not learn from his previous mistakes of portrayal. Once by his wife and once by a harlot. I guess you can say he was weak when it came to women. Delilah lived in the valley of Sorek. It is not known if Delilah ever loved Sampson, but I say probably not as she will betray him for money. Granted it was a lot of money, as there were five lords of the Philistines (55,000 pieces of silver), but if you love someone you would not betray them for all the money of the world.
“And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.” Judges 16:4-5

Maybe some of Delilah actions stemmed from her being a Philistine and Sampson an Israelite. The Israelites were considered below the Philistines because they were slaves. That is why in biblical days, God told the Israelites not to marry outside their faith.

Delilah tried three different times to trick Sampson into giving her the secret to his strength. Each time the lords gave whatever she needed but Sampson fooled them each time.

You might say Delilah was a professional nag. She nagged at Sampson everyday of where his strength came from until he could not stand it any longer and told her the answer.
“And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth. 16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; 17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.”
Judges 16:15-17

Delilah as Sampson’s wife should have known the importance of his Nazarite vow and supported her husband but instead, she lured him to sleep and cut off his braids. Not only did she take away his strength, but she also turned him over to the lords to do as they pleased with him. The lords plucked out his eyes, but nowhere do you see that Delilah felt any remorse.
“And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. 19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him. 21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.” Judges 16:18-21

Delilah is not mentioned again in the Bible. We do not know what happened to her after her betrayal of Sampson. Could it be possible that she was at the great sacrifice to the Dagon god? This is where Sampson requested strength from God to avenge the Philistines that took his two eyes. He pulled down the two pillars he was tied to and killed about three thousand men and women.
