Yoga vs Biblical Meditation

I thought I would look up the meaning of Yoga & found some pretty scary things.  Christians, the meaning itself should send all kinds of warning signals out to you, but Satan will whisper in your ear, “It’s only exercise, you don’t have to be a Buddhist, it’s okay.” Kind of sounds like Eve in the garden, doesn’t it?

Quora definition of “Yoga” is “union”. It is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” (pron. “yug”)meaning “to join”, “to unite” but also “to subjugate”, with the meaning also “to control” and “to disciplinate”. The English word “yoke” is also derived from the same Sanskrit (Indo-European) root.  Sanskrit is the ancient language in Hinduism, used as a means of communication and dialogue by the Hindu Celestial Gods, and then by the Indo-Aryans(over 1 billion people speak Indo-Aryan, mostly in southern Asia). Sanskrit is also widely used in Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism.

First of all the words union, join, to unite, I find scary. Become a union, join or unite to what?  Don’t think they mean to God.  But the meaning of subjugate is really frightening; Subjugate | Define Subjugate at subjugate verb (used with object), subjugated, subjugating. 1. to bring under complete control or subjection; conquer; master. 2. to make submissive or subservient; enslave.

Yoga teaches you to concentrate on yourself not God, putting God & you on the same level, which is contrary to God’s word. You are opening your mind for Satan to step in.  The bible warns us 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” The bible also says in 1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” I do not believe making yourself a God exactly fits this verse.

1 Timothy 4:7-8 (KJV) tells us:  But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come  This verse doesn’t mean not to take care of your body because 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us our bodies are temples to the holy ghost given to us by God.  What Timothy meant is don’t fall victim to false religions. Knowing the bible and living the bible are profitable to our lives now and in the future. How do you exercise onto godliness, by studying & meditating on God’s word.  When meditating on God’s word you are learning the ways of the God that created you, that takes care of you and that he is the only true & living God. Yoga on the other hand you empty your mind completely to everything and try to tap into your subconscious, which is supposed to give you knowledge & tranquility, but this leaves your mind open to spiritual darkness.  DON’T make the mistake of making yourself a self acclaimed spiritual god!

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22(KJV)  tells us to; Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. Before you embark on such a thing as yoga, you should pray about it, study the bible & look where it originated, and meditate on it. Don’t let yourself be fooled by the, it’s harmless excuse, just because you want to do it. 1 Timothy 4:1(KJV)  Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;  From this study I have deduced that yoga is seducing spirits & doctrines of devils.

How is Biblical Meditation different from yoga. The bible tells us to meditate on God’s word.  This is done by reading our bibles & then taking some time just to think about what we read.  This will help us to have a complete understanding of what God is teaching. It does not tell us to put ourselves in a trance (which itself is an abomination to God-side note-study witchcraft). We are just to ponder on his words. Joshua 1:8 (KJV) tells us why we are to meditate,  “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Psalm 1:1-3 KJV tells us Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

God also tells us that by meditating we shall gain wisdom & understanding, Psalm 49:3 (KJV) My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

God instructs us to meditate, Psalm 46:10(KJV)  Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

I hope this has been helpful to someone.  Let me know your thoughts on this matter. Stay in God’s word & have a blessed day!
