aSticks & stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt! No truth in that statement at all. Sticks & stones will definitely break your bones, but words go much deeper. Words can break your heart, your spirit or even cause someone physical death.
Proverbs 18:21(KJV) Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Never have we seen such truth demonstrated by these words then we have in recent times. We have news, media & social media that spreads good & bad things (mostly bad anymore). We have people holding up life like decapitated heads, showing fake assassinations, cussing up a storm & issuing death threats. What’s even worse than this; people cheer them on. I believe this kind of power has led to the 2017 shooting of our Congressman Scalise & others in Virginia. This man’s social media showed his outright hatred for a political party, and yes, again some cheered.
Proverbs 16:27-29(KJV) rings so true in today’s society; “An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire. 28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. 29 A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good.“
Has this type of thing been going on for 100’s & 1,000’s of years? Yes, if you don’t believe me check out your bible there are all kinds of verses that support this. The only difference is we now have the social power to spread it like a wildfire. The bible warns us about one of the littlest member of your body. It might be little but can start all kinds of trouble. James 3:5(KJV) Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
What do you do to keep a fire going? You heap wood upon it to keep the coals burning. Today the contentious man just keeps stirring the pot, with half truths, racial baiting, and categorizing people Proverbs 26:21(KJV) As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.
Does this mean God’s people should be completely silent? No, but it means exercise wisdom. You can refute words with truth.
Proverbs 12:18K(KJV) There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
Proverbs 11:9(KJV) An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
But to be truthful with you the hardest thing is to realize when to be silent & when to speak. I personally believe the time is now to speak, our world has become so evil. People are influencing the weak who are not grounded in God’s word. Ecclesiastes 3:7(KJV) A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
