Remember the Dead, BUT Do Not Idolized Them!

I was going to write a blog on honoring the dead, but when researching I found we shouldn’t in the typical ways some do.  What I mean is, make it a day of remembrance but not idolatry. We should not make our deceased loved ones into idols. We should remember their lives, but not put them above God.

Should we miss the deceased? Yes, of course we should, after all they were a very important part of our lives. What we should NOT do is:
1).  Exalt them (Idolatry)
Exodus 34:14 (KJV)  For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
2).  Cut or Mark your skin
Leviticus 19:28 (KJV)  Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.
3).  Pray to them or use medians to reach them.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (KJV There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God  doth drive them out from before thee.

People are human and we have a human outlook on life.  Death hurts, but Paul says; to live, you live IN Christ, but to die is gain (you live WITH Christ) Philippians 1:20-21 (KJV)  According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gainThis is important for Christians to remember because, if your loved one is saved, they are with Christ.

I find it a great comfort that death has no victory over us.  Why do I say that?  Because if you are saved you will live with Jesus forever.  Death has no sting or victory over us, because Jesus died, was buried & rose again.  The bible (God’s word) promises us that we have this victory over death in 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 (KJV) So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

This Memorial Day, remember the Great Men & Women who fought for our Country; who died for our freedom. Put flowers & decorate your loved ones graves, honor their lives, but keep it a day of remembrance.
