Even Heaven has walls! But, maybe not for the reason you think!

Walls have many functions.  They keep trespassers out, keep animals in or are decorative.  In bible times, they surrounded cities and were used for protection from rivals or enemies.

Protection-Everyone has heard of the bible story about the walls of Jericho.  The walls of Jericho were massive.  I never knew until now, that the dimensions actually included 3 tiers of walls (http://www.israel-a-history-of.com/walls-of-jericho.html) .  I always imagined it was called the walls of Jericho because it had 4 sides.  Very interesting, but a study for another time. This new information just makes the story even more meaningful to me, because God allowed Joshua to bring them tumbling down. Wow!  Even though the walls were extremely thick & tall, they could not protect the people from God.

Keep animals in– John 10:1 you will see a reference to the sheepfold.  The sheepfold is where they kept the sheep at night to protect them from thieves and predators.  You are probably familiar with this passage: John 10:1 (KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber..

Sheepfold walls are interesting and I found that there were different types of sheepfolds, but for the most part they consisted of loosely stacked stones. http://www.bible-history.com/sketches/ancient/sheep-fold.html

Decorative-This is the category I believe the New Jerusalem (Heaven) falls into. The bible tells us we will not need the sun or moon for light.  God’s glory will provide all the light we need.  Revelation 21:23-25 (KJV)  And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. 24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

Now with this in mind let’s look at the walls of heaven, which gates are open all the time.  If they are opened all the time, then the walls were not built for protection, but for beauty.

I personally believe that God’s glory shines through the precious stones of the wall & magnifies outwards all the beautiful colors of the wall.  Just imagine God’s glory shining through the precious stones of walls that are 200 feet thick.  Remember Heaven will be made of pure elements, so go with the pure colors
