Easter has become another commercialized holiday. Millions celebrate it, but a large percentage do not know the true meaning of this holiday. Some know a little and if asked; what is the meaning of Easter? They would answer oh…Jesus died on Good Friday and rose from the grave on Easter Sunday. It’s a special Sunday that we dress up and go to church. Some might even know that this is a picture of salvation, because he did not stay in the grave but arose from it.
We as Christians often fail to realize that Jesus suffered real pain for us. We read and tell others about Jesus on the cross, but can YOU really imagine the pain. We forget that God loved us so much that he sent his son to DIE for OUR sin. That the only way we can get to heaven is through the shed blood of Jesus. John 3:16-18 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God
Our sins were cast upon Jesus and nailed to the cross. When he died and was placed in a tomb, we died. We were buried with him. But, hallelujah he arose from the grave and is living with God. We too can have this heritage without the pain; if we confess our sins, ask Jesus to forgive our sins, believe that Jesus is God’s son and our Savior, and ask Jesus into our heart.
We have become so desensitized that we really do not appreciate the pain and anxiety that Jesus felt. Yes, people he felt things the same as we do. Jesus was part human, he hurt, bleed and cried the same as you and me. In fact maybe more so. The bible tells us in Luke 22, that Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane prayed for God to remove the upcoming Crucifixion from him, BUT unlike us he prayed that God’s will be done not his. What I want you to notice is verse 44, he sweat big drops of blood. Now, I believe that is more than a little bit of anxiety, don’t you? If it were me, I would have had God send angels for me and skipped the Crucifixion. He was in the garden praying, because he knew what was coming. Luke 22:41-44 (KJV) And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Jesus was also betrayed by Judas, denied by Peter. All these things were mental hurts.
Now, let’s take a look at the physical pain he endured for us. John 19:1-15 (KJV) Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. (When the Roman’s scourged someone they used a special whip. it consisted of several cords and at the end of each cord was something sharp like glass. When the whip bit into the flesh they would jerk it up or down to rip the skin, to cause the most pain and damage possible.) I cannot even fathom the pain he felt when they pulled the beard from his face and spit on him. Isaiah 50:6 (KJV) I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. They placed a crown of thorns on his head & beat him. John 19:2-3 (KJV) And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head,…they smote him with their hands. All this unbearable pain happened before he was crucified. The bible says he was so weak someone else had to carry his cross.
Now, after all the above pain Jesus had nails driven through his hands. They placed one foot on top of the other & drove one big nail through them. Jesus was stabbed to speed up his death; John 19:34 (KJV) But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
Even though Jesus suffered he stilled loved us; Luke 23:34a Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
This is what Jesus went through for any that call upon his name. He was part God/part man and did not have to endure any pain, but for me and you he did. So when you celebrate Easter this year remember exactly the price Jesus’ love cost him. Celebrate that he did not stay dead, he is a living God. Celebrate Jesus and teach your children the true meaning of Easter. It’s the least we can do.
