As a country girl you have a little advantage over city girls because you can observe all God’s living creatures. A pig is a very interesting creature. Some automatically think of them as the dumbest and dirtiest animal on earth, but that is not so. It has been proven that pigs are as smart as a 3 yr old child. Even newborn pigs within hours of birth, will not use the toilet near their sleeping or eating areas.
The most efficient way for pigs (who have very few sweat glands) to lower their body temperature is to cover themselves in mud. Mud is also used to scrape off parasites such as ticks and lice.
Pigs in early biblical days were called unclean animals and in some instances were demon possessed. People were not allowed to eat or touch them. “And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.” Deuteronomy 14:8 (KJV)
Later is the bible it was deemed ok for people to eat and touch pigs. Jesus himself made a very compelling statement found in Mark 7:14-19(KJV) And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. 16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. 17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. 18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; 19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? Why am I quoting scriptures regarding pigs being called uncleaned & then cleaned. Because we at one point were unclean & then deemed clean through the blood of Jesus.
Now let’s think of how pigs can be the picture of righteousness . We have already discovered why pigs are covered in mud. It is a way to protect them from the heat and parasites. Well people, when you accept the plan of salvation through Jesus Christ, you become covered by the blood of Jesus. This marks you as a child of God and heir of God! No other way can you inherit the kingdom of God. I guess you could say you are protected from the heat of Hell also.
Our sins make us dirtier than a mud covered pig. The only way God can see us, is through the cleansing blood cover of Jesus.“For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:” Colossians 1:19-22 (KJV)
What I’m trying to demonstrate is; coverings usually have a purpose. Just as mud protects the pig; Jesus’ blood protects his people. Without the covering of blood, God will not see or hear us. We will not be found righteous to God. We will not be allowed in Heaven without this covering. We must be saved to acquire this covering.
